• Basic color palette is raw umber, ochre, Naples yellow, crimson red and white
  • Background should match the basic color palette!
  • Work from dark to light tones
  • Size of the head on the portrait should approximate the natural size of human head
  • Try to include other body parts other than the head into the scene (shoulders, neck, hands)
  • Keep focus on the face and eyes
  • The best light source comes from the left or right upper corner
  • Think of the proportions rather than of the resemblance first
  • Hide the parts you like least behind decorative or geometrical shapes such as flowers, abstract figures, etc.
  • Choose a good-quality original and keep in mind that painting from the photograph is always more difficult than copying somebody’s painting
  • Your portrait should convey a certain emotion or express a certain idea in other words it should have a soul and tell a story!
